They removed the epidural for pain, the drain tube and the catheter today. His pain is managed well with just pills now. He's comfortable. They say he may get to go home tomorrow. All went well. His heart is doing great. They got all the cancer and don't expect him to need any treatments. Tentatively he'll be having surgery at 6 in the morning, but they are going to confirm the exact time today. They xrayed and discovered he has abreak in his pelvis but there's noyhing they can do about that. His infection seems better. He slept last night and has walked quite a bit today. I know she must be getting tire but we're just not a family that leaves anyone alone in the hospital. They took the pacer wires out today and he will get the chest incision staples out on Monday. Dr. O'Rourke left it up to the primary care doc whether or not to send him home. <br /><br />Dr. Grumley decided some rehab would be a good idea, and we all agree - particularly Jackie, who thinks it would be too much for Mary Ann to manage at home just yet. Dr. Grumley also thinks Jackie has a little bladder infection so he's going to give him a round of antibiotics for that. <p>Mary Ann is opting for rehab in Paducah, barring unforeseen events. Jackie asked the heart surgeon what exactly they did and he put his glasses on right away when we took them in, both of which tell me he's more interested in the world around him than he has been. The doc said his xray looked better today than yesterday that he's improving every day. His heart rate is good. He was joking with us again today lie yesterday morning about he didn't know how many more holes he needed because they keep drawing blood. They will move him out to a regular room today. They're giving his some percoset for pain so he was pretty tired tonight. But he's doing well. He's tired and his heart rate is still irregular. His blood pressure dropped from the meds they are giving for the irregular heart rate. But it came back up. They're not overly concerned about any of this but we, of course, want everything to go back to perfectly normal. He has developed atrial fibrullation (sp?) which is an irregular heartbeat. They say it's not uncommon after heart surgery. They're giving him some medication for it and expect it to convert his heart back to a normal rhythm. I have that as does Jim and our Mom was also was on medication for rhythm too. Jackie doesn't even feel it so it's even possible he has had this before and didn't know it. But they say there's no reason to think this med won't work. They will keep him in ICU another day. <p>He says his chest hurts less now than it did this morning. He was in a chair when we went back at 9. He said moving around had helped his chest.<p>Bob Griffin was here and he went back with me. Jackie likes to see different people so that was good. He's getting a little bored with us. He's more alert this morning - I guess the drugs from surgery have worn off. He says his chest incision is starting to hurt and that his neck and shoulders are sore. Of course, it would be normal to be in some pain after something this major. But, he is doing fine. </div> <div> </div> <div>It was L. Jackie and me that were visiting at 6 this morning and when B. Jackie mentioned he was sore I said, "Well, Big Brother, you'll get better every day." </div> <div>He held up his hand like he was firing a gun and said, "Bang. They had to replace the valve because it was ruptured but were able to use a valve from cow's pericardial sack so he won't have to be on blood thinner. He had about 2 litres of fluid around his heart and lungs. They could see the damage from the heart attack but there's lot of living tissue around it which is good.Things went well.
